2025 OFF-SEASON MOVES

I will only cover the important news and the latest is on top. I also won’t include club or player options being picked up. I’m focused on players and top executives changing teams, as well as extensions.

In a good move, the Miami Marlins signed new closer Pete Fairbanks for 1 year/$13 million. Tampa will miss him.

Pittsburgh signed 1B/DH Ryan O’Hearn for 2 years/$29 million in a good move. San Diego will miss him. He also can receive $500 k each year in incentives.

The Mets traded 2B Jeff McNeil to the Athletics for Minor League RHP Yordan Rodriguez. Makes sense for both teams.

St. Louis traded 1B Willson Contreras to Boston for RHP Hunter Dobbins, Minor League RHP’s Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aika. Good deal for St. Louis to move on from a bad contract. I’m not sure why Boston couldn’t do better at first base, unless they’re moving him back to catcher.

In a shocker, the Chicago White Sox signed 1B Munetaka Murakami for 2 years/$34 million. I’m surprised he chose them, but a good move for them.

A three-team trade between Tampa Bay, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros went down: Pittsburgh acquired 2B Brandon Lowe, OF Jake Mangum and RP Mason Montgomery; Tampa acquired OF Jacob Melton and RHP Anderson Brito; Houston acquired SP Mike Burrows. Hard to say who won now, possibly Pittsburgh or Houston.

Tampa Bay Rays traded SP Shane Baz to Baltimore for Minor Leaguers OF Slate De Brun, C Caden Bodine, RHP Michael Forret and OF Austin Overn. Baltimore needs to shoot higher than Baz, and Tampa probably won the trade.

Philly traded RP Matt Strahm to the Kansas City Royals for RP Jonathan Bowlan. Good move for KC, a bizarre one for Philly, as they downgraded.

In a solid move, San Diego re-signed SP Michael King for 3 years/$75 million.

In a good move, the Cleveland Guardians signed RP Shawn Armstrong for 1 year/$5.5 million.

Philly signed RP Brad Keller for 2 years/$22 million. The Chicago Cubs will miss him, solid signing for Philly.

In what’s looking increasingly bizarre, the Mets keep taking ex-New York Yankees players, as they signed RP Luke Weaver for 2 years/$22 million in an otherwise solid deal. The latter won’t miss him and can easily replace him.

The Atlanta Braves re-signed SS Ha-Seong Kim for 1 year/$20 million. Overpay but it’s a 1 year deal.

Philly signed RF Adolis Garcia for 1 year/$10 million, that likely means the end for Nick Castellanos.

Minnesota Twins signed 1B Josh Bell for 1 year and $7 million, with a buyout for a mutual option for 2027. That’s an OK move. The Washington Nationals won’t miss him.

Arizona Diamondbacks signed SP Merrill Kelly for 2 years/$40 million. That’s a solid move and the Texas Rangers need a replacement now, though they should be fine.

In a solid trade for both teams, Milwaukee traded LF Isaac Collins and RP Nick Mears to Kansas City for RP Angel Zerpa. Doesn’t make much sense for Milwaukee, but KC improve their OF a little bit.

The Detroit Tigers signed CP Kenley Jansen for 1 year with a club option in a solid move. The Angels badly need bullpen help.

In a bizarre move, the Mets signed 2B Jorge Polanco for 2 years/$40 million. It’s an overpay and they could’ve done better at first base and DH. Seattle will miss him, but not at that price.

Texas signed C Danny Jansen for 2 years/$13.5 million in a solid move. Milwaukee weren’t going to re-sign him, when he could’ve signed as a starter elsewhere and did.

The Kansas City Royals extended 3B Maikel Garcia for 5 years/$57.5 million, with a sixth year club option that can make it $85 million. OK move.

The Miami Marlins signed Christopher Morel for 1 year to play first base in a solid move.

Toronto gave President Mark Shapiro a 5 year extension, which we’ll see if works out. They later signed RP Tyler Rogers for 3 years/$37 million, with an $11 million vesting option for 2029. Looks like an overpay. The Mets badly need bullpen help though.

Atlanta signed CP Robert Suarez for 3 years/$45 million. Thet significantly improved their bullpen, with Suarez likely setting up for Iglesias now. The San Diego Padres will miss him, but they still have a good bullpen.

In an odd move, the Atlanta Braves signed OF Mike Yastrzemski for 2 years/$23 million. The Kansas City Royals won’t miss him.

It’s turning into a disaster of an off-season for the Mets, who now lost 1B Pete Alonso to the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore signed him for 5 years/$155 million in an OK deal. This calls into question why they didn’t non-tender Ryan Mountcastle, and whether Coby Mayo will now be traded for starting pitching. Their lineup improved, but they still badly need starting pitching. The Mets now desperately need starting pitching and a big bat.

The Detroit Tigers probably overpaid as they signed RP Kyle Finnegan for 2 years/$19 million.

The Los Angeles Dodgers finally fixed their closing situation, by signing Edwin Diaz for 3 years/$69 million. It’s an overpay, but is a short-term deal. This makes the Mets look bad, as they gave a 3 year deal to a worse reliever to be their new closer. Tanner Scott is now an overly expensive set-up man in LA however. This means that Roki Sasaki is going back in the rotation, which I’m sure is his preference anyway. It’s also smart to give him another chance to do what he was signed to do originally.

In a big move, the Philadelphia Phillies re-signed DH Kyle Schwarber for 5 years/$150 million. Good move for both sides, though he will likely decline badly by the end of the deal. A big bat is now off of the market. They also extended manager Rob Thomson through 2027 in a solid move.

In a horrible trade for the Seattle Mariners, and a great one for the Washington Nationals, Seattle traded top prospect C Harry Ford for RP Jose A. Ferrer. Washington have their new catcher of the future and Seattle get a pretty average reliever back.

The Cincinnati Reds re-signed CP Emilio Pagan for 2 years/$20 million in a solid move.

The Tampa Bay Rays signed CF Cedric Mullins for 1 year/$7 million. Why do they even need him? The Mets however won’t miss him.

The Chicago White Sox signed RP Anthony Kay for 2 years/$12 million in a weird overpay.

In an interesting move, Toronto signed SP Cody Ponce for 3 years/$30 million. It made sense for them to move on from Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt.

In a risky move, the Mets may have their new closer, as they signed RP Devin Williams. The New York Yankees rightly moved on from him.

Baltimore overpaid by signing RP Ryan Helsley for 2 years/$14 million a year. He can opt out after the 2026 season. The New York Mets won’t miss him. Another bad move by Baltimore so far.

The San Diego Padres took their first rotation hit, officially losing SP Dylan Cease. They desperately need a replacement. The Toronto Blue Jays signed him for 7 years/$210 million. Solid move if he consistently lives up to his ability, though they overpaid.

The Chicago Cubs signed RP Phil Maton for 2 years/$14.5 million, with a club option for a third season. Solid move for Chicago, and the Texas Rangers will need to replace him adequately, if they plan on competing at all next season.

The St. Louis Cardinals continued their rebuild, by smartly trading SP Sonny Gray and $20 million to the Boston Red Sox for RHP Richard Fitts and LHP Brandon Clarke. They have young pitchers to replace him with including Fitts. I don’t like it for Boston. He’s in decline and they need someone younger and better. They would be better off bringing a couple of those players.

In a bad contract swap, the Texas Rangers acquired their new RF (or LF) in Brandon Nimmo, while the New York Mets upgraded at second base with Marcus Semien. The Mets however acquired a declining player, while Nimmo is still in his prime.

In a solid move for both sides, the Atlanta Braves re-signed CP Raisel Iglesias for 1 year/$16 million.

In an odd trade for the Baltimore Orioles, they traded SP Grayson Rodriguez to the Los Angeles Angels for LF Taylor Ward. Anaheim needed a SP more than a replaceable hitter like Ward.

New York Yankees CF Trent Grisham smartly accepted the $22.025 million QO. With a weak CF market, it’s good for the Bronx Bombers too. Also smartly accepting QO’s are Detroit Tigers 2B Gleyber Torres and Chicago Cubs SP Shota Imanaga. In a great move for the Milwaukee Brewers, and a strange one for SP Brandon Woodruff, he accepted the QO as well.

The Seattle Mariners extended 1B Josh Naylor for 5 years/$92.5 million in a good move.

San Diego hired Craig Stammen as their manager in an interesting move. A less interesting move saw the Colorado Rockies hire Paul DePosesta as their new PBO. Nothing will change over there.

The Kansas City Royals re-signed C Salvador Perez for 2 years/$25 million. Good move and a nice show of loyalty from both sides.

Toronto Blue Jays SP Shane Bieber strangely picked up his $16 million player option. Great for Toeonto.

Atlanta hired Walt Weiss as their new manager. We‘ll see what happens.

The Washington Nationals hired Blake Butera as their new manager. I have no opinion.

Minnesota named Derek Shelton their new manager. Nothing will change so OK I guess.

The San Francisco Giants hired Tony Vitello as their new manager. We’ll see how it works out.

The Los Angeles Angels hired Kurt Suzuki as their manager. I’m not optimistic for them.

San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt retired. I got nothing.

The Tampa Bay Rays were sold by the Stuart Sternberg led ownership group, to a group led by Patrick Zalupski. I have no comment.

Texas hired Skip Schumaker as their new manager in a good move.

The Los Angeles Angels fired manager Ron Washington, though the bad season wasn’t his fault. It was a pointless move.

In a smart move, the Colorado Rockies have parted ways with GM Bill Schmidt.

Brian Snitker has resigned as the Atlanta Braves manager. I hope he wasn’t pushed out as this season wasn’t his fault.

The San Francisco Giants fired manager Bob Melvin in a questionable move. The Minnesota Twins then fired Rocco Baldelli and it’s the same thing. The Texas Rangers then parted ways with their manager Bruce Bochy. Managers are paying the rice of cheap and incompetent owners.
