Latest on top. I’m only analyzing major moves.
Washington Nationals hired Paul Toboni as their new PBO, in a move that’s hard for me to rate at this time.
Boston extended CP Aroldis Chapman for 2 years/$26 million ($13.3 million guaranteed and an option for the 2026 season.). Risky move as he won’t repeat his performance from this seasons
Baltimore Orioles pitcher extended C/1B Samuel Basallo for 8 years/$67 million in a highly risk move.
Boston Red Sox extended LF Roman Anthony for 8 years/$130 million. Very risky move for both sides and an unneeded one for Boston. Anthony really sold low on himself.
The Miami Marlins smartly traded disappointing RF Jesus Sanchez to the Houston Astros for SP Ryan Gusto and prospects Chase Jaworsky and Esmil Valencia. Weird overpay for Houston and Miami improved the farm and the rotation mix.
San Diego acquired solutions for their issues in LF and DH by acquiring DH Ryan O’Hearn and LF Ramon Laureano from Baltimore. Baltimore smartly traded their free agents to be for prospects. San Diego look like contenders as they traded Cobb Hightower, Tyson Neighbors, Victor Figueroa and Tanner Smith.
Arizona’s fire sale continued, as they traded starting pitcher Merrill Kelly to the Texas Rangers for prospects Kohl Drake and David Hagaman. Solid move for both sides but won’t make too much of a difference.
The Minnesota Twins got rid of a bad contract, by trading SS Carlos Correa to the Houston Astros for an undisclosed contract. Bad trade for Houston.
The New York Yankees upgraded at closer, acquiring David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates for prospects Edgleen Perez, Rafael Flores and Brian Sanchez. Big improvement for the Bronx Bombers and makes sense for Pittsburgh. New York no longer need to acquire a new closer in the off-season. The Bronx Bombers then acquired Camilo Doval from San Francisco. Good trade for New York, not good for San Francisco as he wasn’t an upcoming free agent. New York improved for the future as well as this season. San Francisco received prospects Jesus Rodriguez, Trystan Vierling, Parks Harber and Carlos De La Rosa.
In a good move, the Mets upgraded in CF with Cedric Mullins, while Baltimore moved on from the free agent to be, acquiring prospects Raimon Gomez, Anthony Nunez and Chandler Marsh. Solid move for both teams.
The Athletics traded closer Mason Miller and J.P. Sears San Diego Padres for prospects Leo De Vries, Braden Nett, Henry Baez and Eduarniel Nunez. It’s a shocking move and a good one for both as relievers are volatile, but he is good.
The Cleveland Guardians traded rehabbing SP Shane Bieber to the Toronto Blue Jays for pitching prospect Khal Stephen. I wonder why they gave up on him, it could be a problem for Toronto. Good move for Toronto otherwise and not a high return for Cleveland.
Seattle may have secured the playoffs and a legitimate pennant run, by acquiring 3B Eugenio Suarez from Arizona. They traded three prospects for him in return: Tyler Locklear, Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos. Arizona had to trade the free agent to be.
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired new CP Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins for prospects Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait. Minnesota sold low, but Philly got a steal giving their hole at closer.
In a shocking move, the New York Mets acquired RP Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals for prospects Jesus Baez, Frank Elissalt and Nate Dohm. Great move for both teams as he’s a free agent to be.
The Chicago Cubs extended GM Jed Hoyer. Solid move if ownership finally spends.
The Kansas City Royals smartly extended SP Seth Lugo for 2 years/$46 million in a good move. They’re not giving up on next season and that’s a good thing for them.
The New York Yankees finally got a third baseman, acquiring Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies for Minor League pitchers Griffin Herring and Josh Grocz. New York improved and Colorado will hopefully for them finally rebuild.
The Arizona Diamondbacks started the sell-off, reading 1B Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners, for pitching prospects Ashton Izzi and Brandyn García. Seattle finally get a bat, while Arizona move on from an upcoming free agent. Good love for both sides.
The Washington Nationals cleared house at manager and GM rightly.
The San Francisco Giants picked up their option on manager Bob Melvin in a good move.
Minnesota picked up their option on manager Rocco Baldelli in a good move.
Holy shit. The Boston Red Sox finally moved on from problematic DH Rafael Devers, trading him to the San Francisco Giants for SP Kyle Harrison, RP Jordan Hicks and prospects 1B/OF James Tibbs and RHP Jose Bello. Boston take a short-term hit, but the prospects and Harrison will help. San Francisco needed hitting and they’re getting it here, though Harrison may be missed. Good move for both teams.
Colorado Rockies fired manager Bud Black for ownership’s mistakes in a pointless move.
The Toronto Blue Jays extended 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for 13 years/$500 million in a questionable move for the team, and a surprise one for Vlad. He got more than he’s worth, but he could’ve potentially made more in free agency after the season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates fired manager Derek Shelton and replaced him with Don Kelly. It’s not Shelton’s fault that ownership won’t spend.
