The latest news on top.
The Los Angeles Dodgers extended manager Dave Roberts in a good move.
New York Yankees extended manager Aaron Boone for 2 years in a smart move.
Kansas City extended GM J.J. Picollo through 2030 and picked up a team option on manager Matt Quatraro for the 2026 season. Good move.
In a shocking overpay, the Boston Red Sox signed 3B Alex Bregman for 3 years/$120 million. Houston will miss him and Boston gets better.
The San Diego Padres signed SP Nick Pivetta for 4 years/$55 million in an OK move.
The Los Angeles Dodgers re-signed SP Clayton Kershaw for 1 year in a good move.
The Los Angeles Angels signed RP Kenley Jansen for 1 year/$10 million. Solid move for them and Boston won’t miss him.
I wrote about this one here.
Detroit signed SP Jack Flaherty for 2 years/$35 million in a solid move. The Los Angeles Dodgers won’t miss him.
In a pointless move for a team that desperately needs a rebuild, the Toronto Blue Jays signed SP Max Scherzer for 1 year/$15.5 million. The Texas Rangers won’t miss him.
The Tampa Bay Rays uncharacteristically signed SS Ha-Seong Kim for 2 years/$29 million. Solid move. San Diego will miss him.
The Los Angeles Dodgers just signed RP Kirby Yates for 1 year/$13 million. Wow. They may be the best team in the game. The Texas Rangers got worse.
The Toronto Blue Jays signed new LF or RF Anthony Santander for 5 years/$90 million. Solid signing though they should rebuild instead. Baltimore keeps getting worse.
The Los Angeles Dodgers got better at the expense of the San Diego Padres.
Roki Sasaki unsurprisingly chose the Los Angeles Dodgers, and they’re now loaded in the rotation.
Houston understandably moved on from SP Justin Verlander, who signed a 1 year deal with the San Francisco Giants. Pointless move for San Francisco.
The Athletics extended DH Brent Rooker for 5 years/$60 million with an option for $22 million. Good move.
In a stunner, the Arizona Diamondbacks signed SP Corbin Burnes for 6 years/$210 million. This is a risky but potentially great move for Arizona, with all of their starting pitching free agents after next season. Baltimore badly need an ace and it’s bizarre how they didn’t re-sign him, or add anyone good enough to replace him.
The Los Angeles Dodgers re-signed LF Teoscar Hernandez for 3 years/$66 million in a good move.
The Detroit Tigers signed 2B Gleyber Torres for 1 year/$15 million. Solid move that I’m curious to see how it works out. The New York Yankees can replace him with no issues.
I wrote about another move here.
Boston signed SP Walker Buehler for 1 year/$21.05 million in a good move. The Los Angeles Dodgers won’t miss him after 2024, but can always bring him back if he bounces back in 2025. Boston is gambling and that’s questionable.
The Texas Rangers added a new DH in a bad deal, bringing in Joc Pederson for 2 years/$37 million. Arizona will need a new DH, while Texas well overpaid.
In a disappointing piece of news for Washington Nationals fans, they settled for Nathaniel Lowe as their new first baseman. They acquired him from the Texas Rangers for lefty reliever Robert Garcia. Good trade for Texas.
I wrote about another big trade here.
Arizona replaced Walker by acquiring Josh Naylor from the Cleveland Guardians, for RHP Slade Cecconi and a Competitive Balance Round B draft pick. Arizona got a steal here in a very good move. Cleveland then immediately signed Carlos Santana for 1 year/$12 million in a solid downgrade. They did however weaken the Minnesota Twins with this.
The New York Yankees signed 1B Paul Goldschmidt to a 1 year deal for $12.5 million. Great move for the Bronx Bombers, as he still has something to prove, still has good Exit Velocities that will work well in Yankee Stadium and it’s a short-term commitment.
The Arizona Diamondbacks lost a big bat, as Christian Walker signed a 3 year/$60 million deal with the Houston Astros. Houston is trying to replace Kyle Tucker’s production, but it’s still a downgrade. It’s an OK signing but I don’t think it’ll work out that well due to his age.
I wrote about this signing here.
The New York Yankees acquired new CF Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs along with $5 million, for easily replaceable depth arm Cody Poteet. Chicago sold low, but they wanted to clear space and hopefully for them he won’t rebound in The Bronx. They replaced Hayden Wesneski with Poteet in a “wash”. Aaron Judge can now move to his more natural position of RF. Great move for the Bronx Bombers.
The Athletics now look better than the Houston Astros. I don’t understand this trade for the Tampa Bay Rays though.
In a risky move, the Chicago Cubs acquired RF Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros, for 3B Isaac Paredes, RHP Hayden Wesneski and Minor League 3B/OF Cam Smith. These were all expendable players for Chicago, though they will need to trade an OF now, and will need to either extend Tucker, trade him for more at the Trade Desdline or make the playoffs next season. For Houston, they replaced Yusei Kikuchi with a downgrade in their rotation mix, replaced Alex Bregman in another downgrade and will now need an OF. They now look like they’re playoff run can end in 2025. Bad trade for them. They should’ve extended Tucker or traded him at the Trade Deadline, if not on the way to the playoffs.
The New York Yankees cleared up their starting pitching logjam, by trading SP Nestor Cortes and prospect Caleb Durbin to the Milwaukee Brewers for CP Devin Williams. Milwaukee’s bullpen took a major hit, but they always cut costs. They weren’t going to extend him either and will now need a new closer. They did improve their rotation however. The Bronx Bombers greatly improved their bullpen with and upgrade over Clay Holmes. Good trade for New York.
The Boston Red Sox acquired SP Garrett Crochet for prospects. Good trade for rebuilding Chicago, solid one for Boston, if Crochet can stay healthy.
I covered a surprise trade here.
Interesting trade. The Toronto Blue Jays seemingly won at first glance. Odd salary dump by the Cleveland Guardians. I think that it’s a bad look for them.
In a slight overpay, the Texas Rangers re-signed SP Nathan Eovaldi for 3 years/$75 million.
In a great move, the New York Yankees signed SP Max Fried for 8 years/$218 million. The Atlanta Braves will miss him.
The Philadelphia Phillies signed RP Jordan Romano for 1 year and less than $10 million. It’s a good deal.
In an insane development, the New York Mets signed RF Juan Soto for 15 years/$765 million in an insane overpay. Bad decision for Soto as far as winning goes and now the New York Yankees must replace him.
The Los Angeles Dodgers signed LF Michael Conforto for 1 year/$17 million in a risky move. San Francisco won’t miss him. LA also re-signed RP Blake Treinen for 2 years/$22 million in a good move.
Boston won’t miss LF Tyler O’Neill, the Baltimore Orioles probably overpaid, paying him 3 years/$49.5 million.
The San Francisco Giants signed SS Willy Adames for 7 years/$182 million. Milwaukee will need a bat to replace him. It won’t make a difference for San Francisco, who gave out a bad contract,
In a bizarre bargain hunting move, the Mets signed Clay Holmes as an SP for 2 years/$26 million with a player option for $12 million. The New York Yankees can easily replace him, but the Mets are taking an insane approach to fixing their rotation.
In a good move, the Cleveland Guerdians re-signed SP Shane Bieber for 2 years/$26 million. It’s technically 1 year/$10 million, with a $16 million player option, with a $4 million buyout.
In a surprise and bad move, the Athletics signed SP Luis Severino for 3 years/$67 million. The Mets won’t miss him.
Bad signing by the New York Mets.
The Los Angeles Dodgers signed SP Blake Snell for 5 years/$182 million in a good move. The San Francisco Giants got burned by LA and badly need rotation help. They then extended CF Tommy Edman for 5 years/$74 million in a good move.
The Los Angeles Angels overpaid to sign SP Yusei Kikuchi for 3 years/$63 million. The Houston Astros might miss him, but were right not to beat the price. The Angels are still not a playoff team.
The Miami Marlins have a new manager and I wrote about it on Marlin Maniac.
In a good move, the Kansas City Royals re-signed SP Michael Wacha for 3 years/$51-72 million with a team option from $14-18 million based on incentives.
The Atlanta Braves cleared up their DH logjam by unloading Jorge Soler on the Los Angeles Angels for SP Griffin Canning. Good trade for Atlanta and a really bad one for Anaheim, who gave up a young starting pitcher for a bad contract.
The Chicago White Sox hired Will Venable as their manager in a solid move.
