FANTASY BASEBALL 2021: DAILY PLAYER ADVICE & CLOSER CHART

As the season goes on, some players become underrated and potential buy lows and others become overrated and great sell highs. The players in the “pick up” section are those who may still be available on your league’s waiver wire, as in they’re owned in less than 60% of leagues. The players to drop are still owned in over 50% of leagues. I’m not listing obvious drops, such as players who suffered serious injuries that will end their season or players demoted to the Minors. This is primarily for redraft leagues. Players are in alphabetical order based on last name.

BUY

1. Chapman, Aroldis NYY CP

He’s going to bounce back as his track record and xFIP show.

2. Chisholm Jr., Jazz MIA 2B

He can still provide power, speed and runs when healthy.

3. Nola, Aaron PHI SP

His ERA is a run higher than both his FIP and xFIP, that are in the 3.50 range (07/21/2021). He also has a good track record.

4. Rodriguez, Eduardo BOS SP

He’s had a terrible ERA all season, but he had a 2.83 ERA over the last month (07/21).

5. Torres, Gleyber NYY SS

He’s finally heating up, but his owners might not believe in him and want to get rid of him while he has value again.

SELL

1. Arozarena, Randy TBR LF

He’s too streaky to count on and maybe losing playing time.

2. Bauer, Trevor LAD SP

Who knows if he’ll even play again this season, so sell while you still can.

3. Biggio, Cavan TOR 3B

He‘s having a terrible season: 226/.431/.378 with a normal .290 BABIP (07/21/2021). He’s not going to turn it around and he’s batting too low in the batting order with no hopes of moving up.

4. Bryant, Kris CHC 3B

He’s batting .264/.346/.489 with a normal .311 BABIP (07/21/2021). It’s a good time to sell high and get better production for the rest of the season.

5. Castellanos, Nick CIN RF

He has a .386 BABIP (07/21/2021). Steamer expects him to hit .266/.328/.484 the rest of the way. Even worse, he’s now injured. He was never really worth the price to begin with, so sell high while you still can.

6. Gallen, Zac ARI SP

Low chance for wins, injury issues, 3.90 FIP, 4.07 xFIP… sell.

7. Greinke, Zack HOU SP

6.64 K/9, 4.15 FIP, 4.17 xFIP (07/21/2021). He’s been in decline for years now.

8. Mullins, Cedric BAL CF

He has no track record and his BABIP is high (.359 as of 07/22) and his career BABIP is .316 (also as of 07/22). Steamer projects .256/.320/.420 the rest of the way so you may want to stay on the safe side.

9. Snell, Blake SDP SP

5.81 BB/9 (!), 4.57 FIP, 4.06 xFIP. Sell while you still can (07/21/2021).

10. Yelich, Christian MIL LF

His power is gone and it’s not a fluke. He has a .239/..391/.376 batting line with a .331 BABIP and only 6 HR in 298 PA (07/21/2021). Sell while he still has name value.

PICK UP

1. Bard, Daniel COL CP

His advanced metrics indicate that his poor production is a fluke and he’s getting saves.

2. Barlow, Scott KCR CP

Despite his recent bad outings, he’s still the best reliever in their bullpen by far with elite numbers and he isn’t getting traded.

3. Taillon, Jameson NYY SP

He has 4 wins and a 2.70 ERA over the last month (07/21).

DROP

1. Chapman, Matt OAK 3B

Why does anyone still have him? .219/.313/.371 and a normal .298 BABIP. It’s time to move on while he still has some name value (07/21/2021).

2. Gurriel Jr., Lourdes TOR LF

His advanced metrics and projections indicate not much improvement.

3. Lamet, Dinelson SDP SP

He can’t stay healthy or pitch a starter’s workload. He will likely be shut down for the season soon. He might still be tradeable.

4. Plesac, Zach CLE SP

He’s waiver wire material with no hope for a rebound: 4.19 ERA, 4.78 FIP, 4.46 xFIP and a 5.90 K/9 (07/22).

CLOSER CHART

The chart is color coded: Red = close to losing his job. Orange = might be in danger of losing his job soon. Green = safe. Asterisk next to the closer indicates that he’s injured and that the “next in line” is currently the closer. Red/orange doesn’t always mean that the closer us doing badly, he might simply be a trade candidate.
